Nov 18-29 New Japanese Cinema

Nov 18-29 Word Is Out The first feature-length documentary about lesbian and gay identity startled audiences across the country when it appeared in movie theaters and on TV in 1978. The film brought mainstream attention to gay rights issues and became an icon of the emerging movement of the 1970s.

Dec 2-5 John Cassavetes and Peter Falk John Cassavetes and Peter Falk worked together on numerous films, and every time they collaborated, Cassavetes directed and acted in his finest films, and Falk produced his best performances. This series celebrates their illustrious partnership.
  • Special Guests:
    Professor Ray Carney on Fri, Dec 4, at 8 pm. Prof. Carney is an expert on the life and work of John Cassavetes. His books about Cassavetes include American Dreaming: The Films of John Cassavetes and the American Experience, The Films of John Cassavetes: Pragmatism, Modernism, and the Movies, John Cassavetes: The Adventure of Insecurity, and Cassavetes on Cassavetes.


    Dec 4, 5 Boston Turkish Festival Film Competition at the MFA
    The 14th Boston Turkish Film Festival Competition (December 4-9) at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Boston University includes 54 films from countries including Armenia, Canada, France, Germany, Holland, Iran, Turkey, the UK, and US. In addition to “Best Documentary" and "Best Short Film" as selected by the jury, the "Audience Awards" will be announced on December 9 at Boston University. An opening night reception follows the December 4 screening. Location TBA.

    Dec 9-13 Z When a liberal politician is murdered in an attack during a peace demonstration, the police and right-wing military figures not only try to hide their involvement it, but also attempt to cover up the murder. Winner of both the Cannes Jury Prize (awarded unanimously) and a Best Foreign Film Oscar, the film is “A brilliant suspense thriller. It will make you weep and will make you angry. It will tear your guts out.” (Roger Ebert).


    Dec 9-16 Strongman Described as "a strange and strangely beautiful movie" by Variety's John Anderson, Strongman is story of Stanley “Stanless Steel” Pleskun, who can lift dump trucks and bend pennies with his bare hands, but struggles to transcend a chaotic home life and his advancing age. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at this year's Slamdance Festival, the film also played at the 2009 South-by-Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival.

    Dec 23-Jan 3 The Costumes of Edith Head Edith Head (1897-1981), one of Hollywood's most influential costume designers, worked on more than 400 films, but her work with Paramount Studios is the most famous. This series celebrates the storyboards and sketches she brought to life to create some of Hollywood's most memorable moments.
